Spacing Structural Members (Beams, Columns) in Advance Steel

If you need to space the structural members certain way, you sont have too many options such us in Revit.

But, thankfully you can use plain lines as your guides.

Spacing by Drawing a Line

To control the spacing between the beams, draw the lines and convert some of them into beams. To start LINE command, type “L” on the keyboard and the menu will appear:

Press ENTER. Then you will be asked to specify the first point of the line. Enter 0, 0, 0 (enter commas as well). Next, you will be asked to enter the line length, enter the length in inches (if you are in the United States):

Continue drawing lines perpendicularly. Now represent the line of the desired spacing:

Press enter and next, draw a line representing a second beam running parallel to the first line drawn:

Your drawing should look like this:

Converting Lines into Beams

Now select lines representing structural members, and with both lines selected click Beam from Line icon on the Ribbon in the Objects panel:

You will be asked if you want to get rid of the selected lines and left only with new beams or if you want to keep the lines and the new beams:

If you click NO, you can delete those lines later. You will be presented with two new beams and the dilog box will open where you can specify the desired section of the beams:

Choose the section and close the dialog box. Your beams will be inserted and spaced specified by the length of the vertical line. You can verify this by inserting a dimension DIM:

Spacing by OFFSET Command

Draw the line using the LINE command:

Type O for OFFSET:

Specify Offset Distance and the side where the new line should be inserted:

Press ENTER, and the line will be drawn, spaced by the requested value:

Now you can convert the line into a beam like we did above using the Line into Beam command:

The result will be beams created and separated by the specified distance:

Spacing Several Beams Equally

If you need to draw several beams and space them equally, the easiest and most efficient way is to divide a line equally. First, draw the line select it and type DIV  (divide), and type into how many segments you want to divide this line:

The line will become divided and the division center marks will appear:

Now, you can copy the line representing the beam using a Copy command or you can draw new lines from the marked points:

Next select the lines and convert them to beams using Beam From Line command:

Beams will be drawn and spaced equally:
