One of the more important components of shop drawings is the Material List or the Bill of Material (BOM). Advance Steel provides you with the BOM Templates Palette with some predefined BOM templates that can be used to generate assembly lists, beam lists, bolt lists, saw lists, etc. Below are the full instructions on how it works.

Accessing The BOM Lists
You can get to BOM lists from the Home tab and from the Output tab.
Accessing From Home Tab
Home tab > Documents panel > BOM Templates palette
Accessing From Output Tab
Output tab > Documents panel > BOM Templates palette

Starting The Assembly List Procedure
- Start the BOM Templates Palette tool from the Hometab > Documents panel
- From the toolbar on the left side, click the Assembly Lists A list of all the templates will be displayed in the middle section of the palette
- Start Assembly List tool
The assembly list will be generated and displayed in a separate window. At the top of the Assembly List window, there is a counter showing the total number of pages created in the report (circled in red):
- You can use the green button to browse through the pages of the report.
- To save the generated assembly list – click the Savebutton in the top left of the window, and the Save As dialog box will open.
- The path where the file will be saved is displayed in the File Nametext box. Without changing the folder, the file will be saved in the BOM folder inside the project folder.
- The file will be saved in the .RDF This format file can be read only by Advance Steel. If you wish to share this report with others, you need to export this as an Excelsheet or PDF file that can be read by most computers.
Export as Excell, PDF Or Other
- Tap on the green Export button located in the top left corner.
- From the Export Formatdrop-down menu, select desired file format:
- Once you’ve made your choice, click OKto confirm.
- The Save Asdialog box will open. Specify the destination folder and file name.
- Click the Save
- If you wish to save it in another file format as well, you’ll have the chance to do it now. Just repeat the procedure described above.
- If you are done with saving in other formats, close the Assembly List
Preview The Assembly List
- To preview the Assembly Listagain, start the Document Manager dialog box from the Home tab:
Home tab > Documents pane > Document Manager
From the left pane of the dialog box, expand Lists > Up to Date
- The Assembly Listwill be displayed.
- Click on the Assembly Listto open it in the preview window.
Important Note: If you didn’t save your report in the native Advance Steel. RDF file format, the report will not show in the Document Manager dialog box.
Generating And Exporting The Shipping List Procedure
The Shipping List is very convenient and practical as it provides important information, like the Total Weight and Center of Gravity of each beam and column that will be shipped. Here is the procedure to create one:
- You need to open the BOM Templates Palette. You can access it in the Home or Output tab:

Generating And Exporting The Saw List With Pictures Procedure
The Saw List with Pictures provides you the details of all the structural members that are required to be sawed. Here is the entire procedure on how to create one:
